Sappho’s oeuvre and the material nature of its survival—barely visible ink on flaking papyri—was the impetus for the conception of this piece. Out of this fragile corpus of works, “fragment 147” is a particularly evocative one, wherein someone whose identity is lost to history is professing their desire to be remembered.

In that, being almost not retained, the two musicians, unable to cue, let alone visually register one another, are in a constant exercise of this very Sapphic remembrance.
