Leiter III

viola [2023]

Composed in one sitting, Leiter III is an experiment concerning shifts in perspective and senses of scale. Across the work, individual cells of ideas are stretched, compressed, and at times, manipulated beyond recognition. While this method of composition seemingly results in a fragmentary piece, these shards of meaning, through an additive process, make up a fully constructed piece. In this regard, this piece was inspired by Valie Export’s 1972 work of the same title, where the artist dissects an image of a ladder into individual images by subtly shifting the position of the camera. What results from this is a final work that has an existential duality, where two opposites coexist within a singular entity.
