Hearthrug, near the Fender

piano trio & percussion [2023]

In Hearthrug, near the Fender, the ensemble is split up into two subgroups: a “standard” group made up of normal instruments, and a “shrunken” group made up of toy-sounding instruments. Each group is initially assigned distinct material: the standard group plays melodies, the shrunken group harmonies. As the piece progresses, these separate worlds begin to infiltrate each other, and the initial opposition is gradually eroded.
