contre-jour (what remains unsaid)

two alto saxophones, cello, light [2026]

When subjects are photographed contre-jour, details that would normally be visible become obscured. While a silhouette completely darkens the subject, contre-jour minutely and liminally allows for some details to slip through – the texture of a limited section of the skin, or just the faintest crease on the shirt.

Similarly, there are many different types of erasure present in this work. The melodic material derived from select antiphons from the Tenebrae – an ancient Christian service that progresses with the gradual extinguishing of candles until the congregation is left in total darkness (itself a form of erasure) – is atomized and stuttered through, with the ensemble often getting lost or stuck. Across the piece, the background elements become the foreground, seemingly axiomatic anchors become forgotten, and these erasures are in turn addressed, though in vain, with attempted moments of reprise.
